25th Edition – Pembroke Swieqi Road Races – 31st March 2019
The annual road race events organised by Pembroke Athleta Athletics and Triathlon club has reached its 25th Edition, and this year it’s going to take place on Sunday 31st March 2019.
At the Press Conference addressed by the President of Pembroke Athleta Athletics & Triathlon, on March 15th 2019, held at Eurosport Birkirkara, Mr Victor Camilleri gave details of the popular Pembroke and Swieqi Road Races, due on the 31st March and now at their 25 anniversary. The President continued by saying that applications were to be found on www.pembrokeathleta.com, or on the Club’s Facebook page and that entries are steadily coming in but are expected to be brisk especially as ease of payment through the PayPal electronic system is being widely accepted.
Mr Camilleri went on to state that the Club laid a lot of emphasis on healthy participation to develop the concept of wellness, especially as from a young age. Hence, he continued, the evergreen popularity of the Fun Run for which a large number of parents, guardians and family members also sign up for, being the catalyst to start regular aerobic exercises. For safety reasons the Fun Run will again be staged in series, with children segregated by their year of birth, as has been the established trademark at these events. This event at 10.30am will be preceded by the Walkathon and 5km race that are set to start at 8.30 a.m. and followed 10 minutes later by the longer race – 10km and concluded at 10 a.m. with the youngsters’ 3 km races.
The two Mayors of the respective Local Councils, Mr Noel Muscat for Swieqi and Mr Dean Hili for Pembroke, in the booklet printed for the occasion, both pledged that the support provided throughout the years, which had reaped the desired benefits, will continue to be forthcoming.
Mr Camilleri thanked all those present for the Press Conference and singled out the support extended the Club by the Ministry of Education, SportsMalta, the Commissioner of Police and members and the parent Malta Amateur Athletics Association. Mr Camilleri continued that in Pembroke Athleta, the Local Councils witnessed at first hand the true spirit of voluntary work, through the medium of sport, especially among youth. In this respect, Mr Camilleri stated, it was the express wish of the Club that, as host of so many sporting organisations, it would not be neglected in being provided with an official permanent recognition of its premises and equally important, by the installation of a tartan track, as at other regions of the Island, at the main College of the area, St Clare, which already boasted a wide expanse that was once one of the parade grounds constructed by the British when Pembroke was a Royal Army town.
Mr Camilleri concluded by thanking the many sponsors, primarily among whom EUROSPORT, ATTRANS, Safari Juices and Fontana water, A to Z Electronics, Vee Gee Bee Art, Nesquik and the YUE Fitness Centre Naxxar, for their support to make these events an occasion to be remembered
