Pembroke Athleta at ETCH 2019
|10 athletes from our Club formed part of the 29-strong National Squad that took part in the European Team Championships, Second Division, held at Varazdin, Croatia on the 10-11 August 2019.|
In hot temperatures associated more with Northern Africa, the Malta team met with very strong competition coming from the more populous nations on the Continent. Nevertheless all of our compatriots gave a very good account of themselves, notably where our own athletes were involved. In fact, one of the two National Records set at this Competition was that by Daniel Saliba, who took part in the two hurdling events. His record in the 110m hurdles, his speciality, bettered his time to 15.52 seconds. His time of 56.64 in the 400m hurdles was again very creditable. Moreover, taking part in the 4 x 400m relay, accompanied by another Club stalwart, Steve Camilleri, the four-some recorded a good time of 3:20.61, where it has been a while since a Malta team finished this fast in this event.
At this competition, the highest Division Malta has contested thus far in the current format, a decade since inception, the placings by the Club’s Charlotte Wingfield and Janet Richard in the sprints and those by Ian Paul Grech and Claire Azzopardi in the Long Jump were among the highest obtained by the Malta Team. In fact, Janet’s time in the 400m, when she clocked a very good 54.79 seconds to maintain her current excellent form, awarded Malta the sixth place out of twelve contestants and 7 points towards the total Malta tally. Charlotte’s time of 12.23 seconds in the 100 and 24.54 in the 200m gained 4 and 6 points respectively, the latter placing her seventh. The same position and points were won in the Long Jump by Claire (5.82metres) and by Ian Paul (7.30metres). Ian Paul also took part in the Triple Jump (14.26 metres) and Charlotte and Claire formed part of the 4 x 100m relay managing a time of 46.45 seconds while Janet anchored the 4 x 400m for a time of 3:52.38.
The other Club members who also gave a spirited performance and won points for Malta were Rebecca Sare` (Triple Jump – 12.18metres), Bradley Mifsud (Javelin – 50.95m), Lisa Marie Bezzina (3000m – 10:15.14 and 5000m – 17:49.60 minutes) and Luke Micallef (3000m Steeple Chase – 9:36.21 and 5000m – 15:41.79 minutes).
This being a competition where each athlete pulls together as one provides our athletes with a pride that reflects the spirit shown locally in the Club Leagues, which has given our Club immense satisfaction throughout the years, and which inevitably, will be further portrayed in the years to come. Well done Malta, Well done All our Pembroke Athleta athletes!
