Ian Paul Grech Announces His Retirement from Competitive Athletics

An exceptional athlete, a valued member of our family and a legacy that will forever remain part of Pembroke Athleta.

Some athletes leave behind records, medals and titles. Others leave something far more precious: a lasting impact on the people around them and on the Club they proudly call home. Ian Paul Grech is undoubtedly one of those athletes.

Pembroke Athleta announces Ian’s retirement from competitive athletics with immense pride, heartfelt gratitude and a touch of sadness. While we celebrate an outstanding sporting career, we also reflect on the remarkable person behind the achievements — an athlete who has given so much to our Club, not only through his performances on the track, but also through his dedication, generosity, willingness to help and unwavering commitment to Pembroke Athleta.

Born in 1993, Ian began his athletics journey at a young age within our Club, gradually progressing through its ranks to become one of Malta’s leading long jump and triple jump athletes. Between 2014 and 2026, he secured at least 13 national championship titles, winning both disciplines in the same year on five occasions.

Representing Malta on the international stage, Ian earned one silver and five bronze medals across three editions of the Games of the Small States of Europe (GSSE). His achievements also included appearances at the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast and the 2018 European Athletics Championships in Berlin, alongside numerous participations in the GSSE and the European Team Championships (ETCH).

His outstanding performances were recognised through multiple Athletics Malta Jumper of the Year awards and a finalist nomination at the 2019 MOC Sports Awards.

These achievements speak for themselves, but they tell only part of Ian’s story. Behind every medal and every title lies years of hard work, sacrifice, discipline and passion — qualities that have made him an example to those who have had the privilege of sharing the track with him.

Much More Than an Athlete

For Pembroke Athleta, Ian has always been much more than a champion. He is one of those people the Club can truly count on — someone who has always been willing to lend a hand, offer his support and contribute whenever needed. His value to the Club cannot be measured by medals or championship results alone; it is reflected in his attitude, his generosity and the genuine care he has shown towards the Club and its members.

As captain of PAAT’s men’s team in several editions of the Malta Athletics Club Championships, Ian demonstrated leadership, loyalty and a deep sense of responsibility. He understood what it meant to represent the Club, inspiring his teammates through both his performances and his example.

His contribution continued beyond his own athletic career. Through his work as a youth coach at the Club’s Nursery, Ian shared his experience and knowledge with younger athletes, helping them develop their abilities and encouraging them to pursue their own ambitions. In doing so, he gave back to the Club that had played such an important part in his own journey.

Ian also played a pivotal role in organising all seven editions of the EAP Malta International Track & Field Meeting, an event featured on the World Athletics Meetings Calendar. His dedication and hard work behind the scenes helped make these events possible, strengthening Pembroke Athleta and contributing to the international standing of Maltese athletics.

It is precisely this willingness to give more than what is expected that makes Ian so special to us. His contribution has never been limited to what happens on the track. He has given his time, energy and commitment to the Club, and for that, we will always be grateful.

A Chapter Closes, but the Memories Remain

Retirement marks the end of one chapter, but it does not erase the memories, friendships and achievements built along the way. Nor does it diminish the place Ian holds within Pembroke Athleta.

As he steps away from competitive athletics, we look back with pride at everything he has accomplished and with gratitude for everything he has given us. We will remember the victories, the championships and the international appearances, but we will also remember the countless moments of support, the willingness to help, the leadership and the friendship that have made him such a valued member of our Club.

Athletics has given Ian a platform on which to showcase his talent, but Pembroke Athleta has also been a place where he has grown, contributed and helped others grow. His journey is part of our history, and his influence will continue to be felt by the athletes who follow in his footsteps.

Ian, thank you.

Thank you for the years of dedication, for every jump, every title and every time you wore our colours with pride. Thank you for standing by your teammates, for supporting the Club whenever you were needed, and for giving so much of yourself to Pembroke Athleta.

Most of all, thank you for being the person you are. Your achievements have made us proud, but your character, generosity and commitment have earned you a special place in our hearts.

You may be stepping away from competitive athletics, but you will always be one of us. Whatever the future holds, you will forever be part of the Pembroke Athleta family, and our doors will always be open to you.

You leave the track with an outstanding career behind you, but your legacy will continue long after your final competitive jump.

From everyone at Pembroke Athleta, congratulations on a remarkable journey, and thank you for everything.

We wish you every happiness, success and fulfilment in this next chapter of your life. Once an Athleta, always an Athleta!
