In his eligible final year at the European Kids Athletics Games annual international event for young athletes held in Brno, the Czech Republic, between the 9 and 11th September, 2019, youth star athlete Jeremy Zammit once again made Malta and our club proud with his scintillating performances. Coming on top of the long jump silver medal (5.19 metres) won in 2017 when he had also made it to the 60m sprint A final finishing 7 th (8.13 seconds) and last year’s long jump gold leaping 6.14 metres in addition to the bronze in the 60 metres (7.44 seconds), he was crowned this year with an amazing 7.04 metre leap to again bring home gold in his favourite event. Competing among the talent hailing from 20-odd European nations, Jeremy, only a week earlier having turned 15, gave a classy performance to out-jump everyone, establishing with a 6.95m distance in the heats – his winning jump being over the wind limit – a national best for the U16, a national U18 record and, to cap it all, established a Games record – the best for his age out of 14 editions. Moreover, his heat time in the 60m, posting 7.32seconds, was also a national best U16, although in the final this time wasn’t repeated and he contented with the fifth spot. No wonder the Club is mesmerised and starry-eyed!!! Jeremy is now accompanying Alessia Cristina in the Games’ all-time bests, with Malta featured FOUR times in these lists, needless to say all merit due to these two great Pembroke athletes.
In this 2019 edition the Club was also represented by another three athletes who were also prominent in the final reckoning. Graham Pellegrini made it to the 4 th spot in the 300m, just missing out on a medal when he stopped the clock on 37.30 seconds. In the same event for girls, Jade Elise Borg was 7 th overall in a time of 42.56 seconds. Kay Testa too gave another good account of herself making it to the A final in the 150 metres posting 20.80 after her qualifying 20.44 seconds. She also made it to the A final in the Long Jump with an 8 th spot and 4.80 metres after qualifying with her 4.94 metre jump.
Accompanying the MAAA Team was one of our club coaches, Brenda Muscat, who was undoubtedly a great help to our Club representatives, once again giving witness of the power of Pembroke Athleta in Track & Field.
