694: Julian Mifsud
Challenge meeting 2 held on 28th of March started with promise – nice and sunny, but later on in the day bad weather conditions disrupted the programme which had to be called off midway.
Our rising star Alessia Cristina continued to shine, now also a star in the 70m hurdles. She finished the race in 11.86sec – a good margin of 2 seconds ahead of the competition. The youths girls were given the opportunity to run the 300m hurdles, an introductory event and our athlete Thea Bonett finished the race in 54.36sec.
Next followed the popular 100m senior event races, both won by Pembroke Athleta, Rebecca Sare’ in the womens’ race and Julian Mifsud in the mens’. Sare’, better known for her jumps, won her race in 12.53sec, whilst Mifsud won the men’s race in 11.27sec.
Another good result achieved by our youths was in the 800m where Rachel Attard Chase won the 800m race with a time of 2:43.32, with Luca Falzon in the boys’ event finishing well in second position with a time of 2:26.53.
In the field events, the Pembroke Athleta youths continued to register more victories. Rachel Aquilina, won the cadet’s high jump, the only girl to clear the bar at a height of 1.25m. After witnessing Martina Mamo triumph in the hammer throw a week earlier, this time the Javelin event was added to her long list of achievements. She won the event with a throw of 18.25m. Meantime, our senior thrower Joanne Vella in the same event won with a throw of 31.30m.
That was practically the end of the afternoon events with bad weather taking over, cancelling out the 200m and 400m sprints, shot and discus and other events.
Well done to all our athletes!
