1st Clubs’ League
The Mens’ Team embarked on its quest to retain the Track & Field title won each year since the turn of the century with a thrilling performance, gaining maximum points in 7 of the 13 events on offer. It was literally a field day for the throwers and jumpers, capped by the only victory on the track in the relay, the team edging out a strong La Salle quartet by 13 hundreths of a second. It would be unfair to single out any particular athlete for mention, however of the two individual events our boys could contest it was Bradley Mifsud who came out tops in both, namely the Discus and Javelin events. The collective effort was not missing on the track however, with four second places and another two third place finishes helping in no small way the club to finish ahead on the first day with 187 points, 21 ahead of nearest rivals Savio AC. A hearty well done to all our boys, both those earning points as well as others who gave their all, even if simply competing.
The same can be said for the girls, with our girls trying to regain the crown ceded last year to St Patrick’s. This year’s outfit is a mixture of youth and established athletes and it can be said that the Club is undergoing a general transition. The youngsters especially shone brightly and it was such a pity that the Club had no representatives in two events, pulling back their valiant sisters who gave their hearts out for the club. Although trailing St Patrick’s by 18 points there is still a slim chance of catch-up, provided we can provide the best fire-power and not miss on any event. Indeed it would have been a different story had our presence been in all the 13 events. Once again the results were a repeat of those registered by the men, four field events holding sway culminating with another spirited performance and a top spot in the relay. The athlete shining most brightly in this category was undoubtedly Rebecca Sare`, winning both horizontal jumps and adding zip to the team event. Such was her performance that she has become the first girl to reach the GSSE qualifying standard, so far only gained by the Maltese-Australian Kevin More. Her leap of 12.23 metres in the Triple Jump was her trump card.
In the Boys’ League, a fatal miss in the shot put may well jeopardise the overall Team success this season, when Gary Ghirxi failed to manage one valid throw. Admittedly Gary is more the track type, where he in fact won the 100m sprint convincingly. The team is 12 points adrift but as with the girls, it may still make a good comeback, even if it means winning practically all 10 events in the coming two club meets to retain their title.
